Countertop Installation for Kitchens and Baths

A new countertop changes a room faster than almost any other single upgrade, and it can be done without touching the cabinets if they are sound. Quartz, granite, solid surface and laminate each have different looks, upkeep and prices, and the right choice depends on how hard the kitchen works and how long you plan to stay.

Stone and quartz are made to measure. After the cabinets are level, a fabricator takes a template of the tops, then cuts the slab, polishes the edge and cuts the sink and cooktop openings. Installation day brings the finished pieces, seams are placed where the layout allows, and the sink is reconnected. That template step is why counters cannot be ordered from a catalogue size.

Seams, overhangs and edge profile are the details that show. Ask where seams will fall and whether the pattern in a veined slab will line up across them.

Signs a countertop is ready to be replaced

01

Laminate is peeling at the edges or swollen near the sink

02

Deep chips, burns or stains that no cleaner removes

03

Cracks around the cooktop or sink cutout

04

Seams that have opened and trap water

05

A material that is hard to clean, such as old tile counters with crumbling grout

06

You are remodeling the kitchen and want counters that match the new cabinets

How the work goes, step by step

01

Pick the material

Compare quartz, granite, solid surface and laminate samples in daylight and under kitchen lights.

02

Choose the slab

Slabs vary in veining, so you view the actual piece or a photo of it for natural stone.

03

Template

Once cabinets are level, the fabricator measures every edge and opening.

04

Fabrication

The counter is cut, polished and checked, which usually takes a week or more.

05

Installation

Pieces are set, seams are joined and colour-matched, and the sink and faucet are reconnected.

What changes the price

Material
Laminate and solid surface cost less than quartz and granite, and rare stones cost more again.
Square footage and layout
Long runs, islands and L shapes need more material and more seams.
Edge profile and thickness
A plain eased edge costs less than ogee or mitered edges that look thicker.
Sink and cooktop style
Undermount sinks need extra polishing and cutting compared with drop-in.
Backsplash and demolition
Matching stone backsplash and removal of old counters are separate lines.

What a good quote spells out

  • Material and colour named in the quote, plus the edge profile and thickness
  • Where seams will be placed, and whether a veined pattern is matched across them
  • Whether removal of the old top, plumbing disconnection and reconnection are included
  • Sealing needs for the stone and how long it will keep looking new
  • The wait from template to installation, since some slabs take longer to arrive

Countertops: questions people ask

Quartz or granite?

Quartz is engineered, consistent and does not need sealing. Granite is natural, each slab is different and it should be resealed from time to time. Prices overlap, so look and upkeep decide.

Can countertops be replaced without replacing cabinets?

Yes, as long as the cabinet boxes are sound and level. A fabricator will template over them, and the sink and cooktop openings are cut to match.

How long does countertop replacement take?

The install itself is usually a day. From template to installation often takes one to two weeks, depending on the shop and the slab.

Are laminate counters worth it?

For rentals, laundry rooms and tight budgets, yes. Modern laminate looks better than older versions, but it does not tolerate hot pans or standing water at the edges.
