Custom Tile Showers Built Dry From the Inside

A good tile shower is built from the framing outward. The floor is sloped to the drain, a waterproof layer covers the base and the walls, the corners and fasteners are sealed, and only then does tile go on. Tile and grout are not waterproof, so what sits behind them has to keep the framing dry for decades.

All requests are handled through this form. Add as much detail as you can and we will get back to you fast.

Once the structure is right, you choose the details. A niche for bottles, a bench, a linear drain along one wall, a glass panel instead of a door, a rain head and a handheld. Large-format porcelain means fewer grout lines but needs flat walls, while mosaics follow slopes and curves more easily and suit the shower floor.

Before you compare tile prices, compare the preparation. Two quotes for the same tile can differ by the cost of the membrane, the base build and the testing that sits underneath.

What the work includes

Reasons to rebuild or replace a tile shower

01

Grout stays dark or powdery after cleaning

02

Loose tiles, cracks at the floor corners or a hollow sound when tapped

03

Water stains on the ceiling below or damp drywall outside the shower

04

A musty smell that returns even though the shower is cleaned

05

Water pools in the corners because the floor was never sloped properly

06

The shower is too small or the layout wastes space

How the work goes, step by step

01

Measure and plan

The specialist checks framing, plumbing and the position of the drain, and discusses niche, bench and glass choices.

02

Choose tile and drain

Tile, grout colour, drain style and fixtures are chosen with the price impact of each shown.

03

Build the base and walls

The floor is sloped, the membrane goes on and the seams are sealed.

04

Test and tile

The waterproofing is allowed to cure and checked, often with a water test, before tile is set.

05

Grout, seal and glass

Grout is applied, joints sealed, then fixtures and glass installed.

What changes the price

Size and shape
Larger floors and bench or niche builds mean more material and setting time.
Tile type and pattern
Natural stone, mosaics and patterned layouts take longer to set than a plain large tile.
Drain choice
A linear drain needs a single-plane slope and a more careful base than a center drain.
Waterproofing system
Sheet membranes, liquid-applied coatings and foam-backed boards differ in material and labour.
Glass
Frameless, floor-to-ceiling or custom-cut glass is the biggest variable in the enclosure.
Repairs behind the old shower
Damaged framing and subfloor are fixed before the new base is built.

What a good quote spells out

  • The waterproofing system named, including how corners, niche and curb are treated
  • Whether the base is tested with water before tile goes on, and for how long
  • Tile size, material and the setting material to be used
  • Drain type and the minimum slope, stated for the floor
  • Glass thickness, hardware finish and who measures after the tile is set

Custom Tile Showers: questions people ask

How is a tile shower waterproofed?

A continuous waterproof layer covers the floor and walls, either a sheet membrane, a liquid coating or a foam-backed board, with the seams and drain flange sealed. Tile and grout then act as the finish surface.

Why does grout turn black?

Usually moisture and soap film in a shower with weak ventilation. Sealed grout and a working exhaust fan help, and dark staining that returns often points to water behind the tile.

Is large-format tile better?

Fewer grout lines make cleaning easier, but the wall has to be flat and the tile handled carefully. Smaller tile suits sloped floors.

Can new tile go over an existing shower?

Rarely, and it is not advisable when the wall or base is failing. A proper rebuild removes the old surface so the framing and waterproofing can be checked.
